How do I add a card reader for the front desk?
Order a Stripe Reader S700 in your Stripe Dashboard, generate a pairing code on it, then type the code under Settings > Card readers and press Add the reader.
A card reader lets staff take a card in person: selling a class pack, charging a drop-in, a spectator fee or anything on Take a payment. The money goes to your Stripe account just like an online payment.
Before you begin
- Stripe must be connected: How do I connect Stripe?. Without it the page says to connect Stripe first.
- You must be an owner. Managers cannot add or remove readers.
- The reader needs to be charged and on the gym's Wi-Fi.
Steps
Get a reader
- Open the Card readers page and open Which reader to get, and how to order it in Stripe, or follow step 10 of the Stripe setup guide.
- In your Stripe Dashboard open Terminal, then Shop. Add the Stripe Reader S700 (or S710), plus the hub if you want Ethernet. Ship it to the gym. Stripe bills you directly.
Pair it
- Turn the reader on and connect it to the gym's Wi-Fi.
- On the reader swipe in from the left edge, tap Settings, enter the reader's admin PIN (it is shown in Stripe setup in your back office) and tap Generate pairing code.
- Open Card readers under Settings.
- Type the code in Registration Code, name it in Name It (for example "Front desk") and press Add the reader.
What you'll see
- The reader appears in the table with its model and a status of online (or offline/unknown).
- A Card reader way to pay now shows on Take a payment, Class packs and Check-in drop-ins.
- Before your Stripe account is connected or the site is live, readers you add are test readers on NinjaHQ's sandbox. Add the real one once Stripe is connected.
- Press Remove to take a reader out. It stops taking payments here, and you can add it again with a new code.
Troubleshooting
The reader says it is not online. Check the Wi-Fi and that it has power. Then reload the page.
The code is rejected. Generate a new pairing code on the reader and type it again.
I need to refund a card reader payment. Do it in your Stripe Dashboard.
The Card reader option is not on the register. An owner can turn it off under Take a payment: see How do I choose the ways to pay?.

Which reader should I buy?
The Stripe Reader S700. Choose the S710, which adds a cellular connection for a monthly fee, if you take payments at competitions away from the gym's Wi-Fi. Stripe sets the prices; the Card readers screen shows the current ones.
Can I use a phone or a small Bluetooth reader?
No. Stripe's M2 reader and Tap to Pay on a phone need a phone app and do not work with the back office.
Can I try it without a real reader?
In test mode, type simulated-wpe as the registration code to add a pretend reader.
